Media Resources: Programs for graphics and audio

Here are some pretty cool free programs for creating and editing digital images and sound.

  • the GIMP: GIMP is an acronym for GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed program for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring.

  • Picasa: From the Googlers, this is a wonderful image and photo management and enhancing program.

  • AndreaMosaic: Make photomosaic images with your own pictures. This program is quite a gift from the author.

  • IrfanView: Billed as an image viewer, IrfanView is much more. It is a screen capture utility, image editor, slideshow, and supports more image formats than you'll ever need. Too many features to list here.

  • Audacity: A free, open source program for recording and editing sounds. It's available for Mac OS X, Microsoft Windows, GNU/Linux, and other operating systems.

  • AudioGrabber: A beautiful piece of software that grabs digital audio from cd's. It copies the audio digitally-not through the soundcard-which enables you to make perfect copies of the originals.
