About The Cultivated Web (this web site)
This is the 4th web site I've designed for myself. The first was back in the mid-90s when AOL (yes, I admit it) first offered their members free web space. The technology has changed over the years and grown much more complex. With this site, I strive to adhere to the standards of the World Wide Web Consortium. What that means is the html coding is valid html and the design and layout of the pages is accomplished using cascading style sheets (CSS). One of many frustrations for web designers as of this writing (May 2005) is that not all web browsers are able to correctly display web pages that follow these standards. Sadly, Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE) is one that is impaired. If you are using IE, you will be able to view this site only because of some "fixes" or "hacks" I've used to force IE to behave a little better. However, the way IE displays the pages on this web site is a little off from the true design. So what's the solution? At the moment, I suggest you use a web browser that complies with international web standards such as Firefox and Opera. Keep your IE because some web sites use certain technologies that require IE. But on the vast majority of other web sites, standards compliant web browsers will serve you much better.
